Wolverine's Grandson Revealed: Legacy Combined with Sabretooth's

hugh jackman as wolverine

X-Men‘s Wolverine has his first official grandchild, but the father of this new addition to the Snikt Family transforms Logan’s legacy. As everything changes for Marvel’s mutants, Wolverine’s kids find themselves connected by a single fateful decision.

In today’s Laura Kinney: Sabretooth #1, fans meet Alex – Laura Kinney’s son and Wolverine’s grandson. The X-Men comics are currently embroiled in the Age of Revelation event, jumping ten years into Marvel’s future. In this future, Laura is an enforcer for the villainous tyrant Revelation, while her brother Akihiro and sister Gabby are rebel heroes trying to flee Revelation’s mutant nation. When the three meet up, Laura shockingly asks her brother and sister to take her son with them.

In the process, fans learn that Alex is not just Wolverine’s grandson, but also that of Victor Creed, aka Sabretooth. Logan now shares a family and legacy with the man he hates most in the world. The issue comes from Erica Schultz, Valentina Pinti, Rachelle Rosenberg and Cory Petit.

The issue establishes that Alex’s father is previously unknown character Zane Creed – the heroic son of Victor Creed’s Sabretooth. During the time jump, Zane took his father’s codename and tragically died, with Laura taking the villainous name to honor her slain partner, who she states died in a sacrifice for all mutants. Dan Jurgens’ variant cover (above) shows Laura cradling Zane’s body, but fans don’t yet know exactly what happened to him.

Sabretooth has been Wolverine’s nemesis for over a century, killing some of his nearest and dearest including his wife Silver Fox, lover the Native, and son Akihiro (who was ultimately resurrected.) It’s therefore a huge shock to fans that their legacies are now intertwined in such a complex way. While Zane Creed apparently redeemed the Sabretooth name, Wolverine’s daughter Laura is arguably bringing it back into disrepute by supporting the villainous Revelation.

Our Take on Wolverine’s New Grandson

Seeing Laura give up her child is a dark echo of how Wolverine has had fatherhood snatched away from him again and again, with Laura noting she wants to do better for Alex than Logan did for his children. However, dark as it is, there’s no better way of giving Wolverine a grandson than tying the character to the legacy of his most despised enemy. The issue also turns Alex’s potential mutation into a mystery, begging the question of what monster the two bestial mutant bloodlines could produce.

By jumping ten years into the future, Age of Revelation has sown the seeds of some great storylines to come, and the combination of the Howlett/Creed bloodlines is one of the best. The announcement of this series had fans asking what could possibly have inspired Laura to take Sabretooth’s codename, and it turns out the answer is far more dramatic and wide-reaching than anyone expected, transforming Wolverine‘s entire heroic legacy by combining it with that of his greatest enemy.
