Marvel just launched a new era for Wolverine and the entire X-Men franchise. This seismic change comes with a major redesign, a new name and a sinister new master for Wolverine, who is officially on the side of evil as the Age of Revelation begins.
Wolverine Is Now ‘The Angel of Death’
Logan Has Been Brainwashed into Revelation’s Chief Assassin
Today’s X-Men: Age of Revelation Overture #1 – from Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J.P. Mayer, Edgar Delgado and Clayton Cowles – launches the ambitious ‘Age of Revelation’ event, rebooting Marvel’s entire line of X-Men comics. The story jumps ahead ten years in Marvel lore, into a future where the villainous Revelation has turned America into his own mutant nation, built on his hypnotic voice and an unforgivable genocide of humanity.
In this world, Revelation has corrupted Wolverine into his chief assassin. Draped in monk’s robes, chains and a metallic skull mask, Wolverine is now known as ‘The Angel of Death’, hunting Cyclops’ rebel X-Men in Revelation’s name.
Fans had already seen Wolverine’s new costume, but the new codename and confirmation that he’s Revelation’s pet killer are new. The story shows the mind of the modern-day Cyclops transplanted into that of his future self, with Scott quickly becoming familiar with the new status quo: a world ruled by former X-Men hero Doug Ramsey and his army of corrupted mutants.
As Logan Abandons His Codename, His Old Protégé Is the New Wolverine
Meanwhile, His Daughter Becomes the New Sabretooth
While Logan’s Angel of Death may be a villain in the Age of Revelation, there’s still a heroic Wolverine in this world. Logan’s former protégé Leonard has taken up the name, using his powers as a cursed Wendigo to fight against Revelation’s regime. Fans can follow Leonard’s adventures in The Last Wolverine from Saladin Ahmed and Edgar Salazar, as the new Wolverine and the new Angel of Death battle it out.
Meanwhile, Logan’s daughter Laura Kinney – aka X-23 – has shockingly taken on the identity of his lifelong nemesis Sabretooth. Erica Schultz and Valentina Pinti’s Laura Kinney: Sabretooth will follow Laura as she battles with the rest of the ‘Snikt Family,’ facing off against Brother Akihiro and clone sister Gabby. It seems that Laura is also working for Revelation, though whether she’s a true believer, an infiltrator or a brainwashed thrall will be revealed in time.
The advent of the Age of Revelation just changed everything fans know about the X-Men franchise. Heroes are villains, villains are heroes, and mutantkind are a genocidal threat rather than an oppressed minority. However, there’s no bigger symbol of how much things have changed than the heroic Wolverine becoming Revelation’s Angel of Death, now the ultimate threat to Cyclops’ X-Men.
