Women empowerment policy to include affirmative action on PLWD in Kano

The Kano State government in collaboration with the development Research Project Center (dRPC) have revealed that the ongoing domestication process of the national Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) policy, is considering the inclusion of affirmative action for Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD).

In his address during a meeting of the WEE domestication action plan committee held in the state capital, dRPC’s Senior Programme Associate, Malam Umar Ahmad Umar, disclosed that a suggestion was also made to name the policy a ‘Women Economic Empowerment and Transformation Policy’.

Umar explained that a suggestion was made to include new pillars focused on women in climate and clean energy, waste management, clean cooking and clean energy.

He added that there was also a proposal to incorporate gender lens investing among others.

While addressing members of the committee, Kano Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Disable, Aisha Lawan Saji, stated that the state government is always ready to ensure a successful domestication of the policy that will suit the state.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Saratu Saidu Bala, the Commissioner appreciates the support of dRPC and all other stakeholders in ensuring a policy that would assist in the effective conduct of women economic empowerment in Kano.
