World Leaders Congratulate New UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer

World leaders across politics and religion have congratulated the new United Kingdom Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.

The congratulation pours as Rishi Sunak, immediate former PM of the UK, said on Friday morning that he gave his job his all.

“I have given this job my all. But you have sent a clear message, and yours is the only judgement that matters.

“This is a difficult day, but I leave this job honoured to have been Prime Minister of the best country in the world,” Sunak said.

The new UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, also Friday morning reiterated that he was committed to bringing the change he campaigned for.

“We said we will stop the chaos. And we will. We said we will turn the page. And we have. The work of change begins today,” Keir Starmer wrote.

In their congratulatory messages on Friday, on their X handles, Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese; Canada Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau; and President of France, Emmanuel Macron pledged to work with the new Labour Party-led UK government.

The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, in his congratulatory message, said he looked forward to working constructively with the incoming UK Labour-led government.

“Congratulations to my friend and new UK Prime Minister KeirStarmer on his resounding election victory – I look forward to working constructively with the incoming United Kingdom Labour Government,” Albanese wrote.

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, told Keir there are lots of work to be done to build a more progressive, fair future for the people on both sides of the Atlantic.

“Congratulations, Keir Starmer, on a historic U.K. election victory. Lots of work ahead to build a more progressive, fair future for people on both sides of the Atlantic. Let’s get to it, my friend,” Justine Trudeau said.

On his part, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, who is contesting to be returned against Le Pen, said he hoped to continue work between the two countries.

“Congratulations Sir Keir Starmer on your victory. Pleased with our first discussion.

“We will continue the work begun with the UK for our bilateral cooperation, for peace and security in Europe, for the climate and for AI,” Emmanuel Macron said.

The Catholic Church has also congratulated the incoming prime minister of the United Kingdom. The Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, Vincent Gerard Nichols, said Keir’s comments that he wants a government that works for the church and faith community was most welcomed by the church.

In a statement on Friday, Cardinal Nichols said, “On behalf of the Catholic community of England and Wales, I congratulate Keir Starmer on his victory in yesterday’s general election. I assure him of my good wishes as he takes up his new responsibilities in forming and leading a government.

“The Catholic Church has a long record of partnership with the Government, not least in education where we run over 2000 schools in conjunction with the state. We look forward to this continuing and to working constructively in this and other areas with him, his ministers and officials.

“His previous comments about wanting a government which works with churches and faith communities have been most welcome, and I want him to know that we stand ready to play our part.

“I know that the road ahead is, perhaps, not the easiest one but I wish Sir Keir well as he embarks upon it. I will keep him and his family in my prayers.”
