Respected elder statesman and veteran politician, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has distanced himself from any political movement or group, declaring that his only concern at this stage of his life is contributing ideas that promote national development and unity.

Naijaonpoint reports that the 98-year-old politician made the declaration during a media chat with journalists in Kano on Wednesday, noting that he has stepped back from partisan politics entirely.

“I am not a member of any political group or organisation. My interest is now centred on promoting ideas and initiatives that will move our country forward,” Yakasai said.

Although no longer active in political circles, the nonagenarian has, in recent times, expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, especially in matters concerning national unity and stability.

Yakasai, who played a key role in Nigeria’s post-independence political evolution, remains a revered voice in national discourse.

Naijaonpoint reports that the veteran of the First and Second Republics served as commissioner under Kano State’s first military governor, Audu Bako.

Yakasai was subsequently appointed Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters by former President Shehu Shagari.

He was also a founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a prominent Northern political and cultural organisation.

Throughout his decades-long career, Yakasai has consistently been a vocal advocate for democracy, social equity, and good governance.

In one of his past interventions titled “A Message to Those Planning to Rig Elections,” the elder statesman condemned electoral malpractice and urged younger Nigerians to preserve the sanctity of the ballot.
