THE death toll from the boat accident in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State has increased to 29, following the recovery of two additional bodies from the river.
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), Dr. Goje Muhammad, disclosed that the corpses were recovered by joint search-and-rescue teams from YOSEMA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
He noted that rescue efforts were still ongoing, with between eight and 10 passengers believed to be missing.
Dr. Muhammad added that all survivors who were earlier hospitalised have since been discharged.
Preliminary findings, according to him, indicate that overloading and structural defects of the boat were the major causes of the mishap.
In response to the tragedy, the Yobe State Government has donated ₦20 million to families of the deceased and survivors.
Governor Mai Mala Buni announced the donation during a condolence visit to the Nguru Emirate and the Garbi community, represented by his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana.
Authorities have continued to urge strict adherence to safety regulations on waterways to prevent similar incidents.
