WATCH THE VIDEO HERE YOBE State government officials, led by Deputy Governor Idi Barde-Gubana, held funeral prayers for the 34 victims killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Sunday. The deputy governor expressed his condolences to the victims and stated that the state government would work closely with the Federal Government to establish a military presence in the area to prevent further attacks. He also instructed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to ensure that the displaced individuals and those injured receive proper care at their camps and hospitals. A physically challenged eyewitness to the attack, Ali Abdullahi, recounted how many people were killed and several shops destroyed. He was spared by the attackers when they noticed his disability. Abdullahi said, “Boko Haram attacked our community and killed several people. When they saw I was disabled, they told me to leave. They suspect we are the ones providing the military with information to target and kill them.” Zanna Umar, a resident of Mafa, reported, “We learned that about 125 people were killed. We buried 34 here, while others buried around 40 more, and we will bury the remaining victims tomorrow.” The deputy governor, after receiving an update on the casualties from the governor’s security adviser, reiterated his condolences and directed SEMA to meet the immediate needs of the displaced and injured. He also announced a donation of N30 million to the affected families and emphasized that the state government would collaborate with security personnel to establish a military presence in the area. The recent attack on the Mafa community is considered the worst in Yobe State since the Boko Haram insurgency began 14 years ago.
