You can now check temperature of Google Pixel 9 & other models

Google has rolled out an update for the “Pixel Troubleshooting” app/service. It now allows you to natively check the device temperature on the Google Pixel 6 and newer models including the latest Pixel 9 series. Previously, you could only see the “All settings are optimized” note on the Battery diagnostics settings page. Now, that has reportedly changed.

The Google Pixel 6-9 series now lets you check device temperature after “Troubleshooting” update

The company is reportedly pushing this update via the Google Play Store. If you have eligible Pixel phones like the Google Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, or others, check for the update now. If you find it, make sure to install it. After installing, you can find “Device Temperature” in the Battery diagnostics settings. All you have to do is go to Settings > Battery > Battery Diagnostics > Phone is very warm.

You can now get real-time readings of your Pixel phone’s temperature on that page with different color codes. You’ll see a note hinting the device temperature is “Cold,” “Normal,” “Warm,” or “Elevated.” Folks over at 9to5Google notes that you are likely to see different notes for temperature readings.

For example, when the device temperature is “Cold,” you’re likely to see a description that reads, “Your phone’s estimated temperature is lower than normal. It may shut down suddenly.” When seeing “Normal” temperature, you’ll get a note saying, “This estimated temperature is typical with normal phone use.”

Talking of the temperature reading being “Warm,” you’ll see a different note. It would read, “Your phone is slightly warm, but this is normal during use. To prevent further temperature increases, screen brightness, and network speeds may be reduced.”

On the other hand, when the reading says “Elevated,” the page will display, “Your phone’s estimated temperature is higher than normal. Your phone will try to cool down by temporarily limiting performance and pausing certain features.”

The feature is available post-update for some users on eligible Pixel phones, but not on tablets

The above descriptions give an idea of your Pixel phone’s temperature and indirectly specify its effects on your device. Google subtly leaves a note at the bottom hinting multiple internal sensors help give out the temperature readings.

Therefore, it’s highly likely that you’ll see different tips for maintaining an ideal device temperature. These may include some known tips like using a case or cover with better heat dissipation, closing apps that use a lot of power, etc.

The Live temperature feature is reportedly available with the Pixel Troubleshooting app (version 1.0.693922709) on the Pixel 6, 7, 8, and 9 series running stable Android 15 November release or later. However, it seems the feature isn’t available on the Google Pixel tablet just yet.
