Former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has urged Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to humble himself and apologise to the Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Naijaonpoint recalls that Governor Okpebholo had, on Friday, July 18, 2025, while speaking during the defection of Hon. Marcus Onobun, representing Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben federal constituency at the National Assembly, directed Peter Obi to always notify him when visiting the state.

Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of modern transportation in Edo State, Okpebholo also said he does not regret telling Obi to seek his permission before visiting the state.

Okpebholo noted that his directive was only an advice and not a threat, recalling how he failed to adhere to such a directive by a Commissioner of Police during the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki, which led to the death of his Police orderly, Inspector Akor Onu, at the Benin Airport.

However, Reuben Abati responded that Governor Okpebholo does not have the authority to demand permission from Peter Obi.

The journalist also stated that Okpebholo should apologise to Edo people, adding that the Governor cannot stop Peter Obi if he decides to take a second wife from the state.

He said, “If Peter Obi decides tomorrow to take a second wife, will Okpebholo say he cannot come to Edo and take an Edo woman?

“He should apologize for embarrassing Edo people.”
