The Osun State Police Command has denied claims that it illegally detained one of the aides of Governor Ademola Adeleke, Abiodun Adegoke.
Adeleke had earlier accused the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gothan, of unlawfully detaining Adegoke and denying him bail.
However, speaking via a statement on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, explained that Adegoke was only arrested after he repeatedly ignored police invitations and went into hiding for approximately two weeks.
He stated that a formal petition had been lodged against Adegoke and another individual, Iyiola Monsuru, prompting the commencement of a police investigation.
He said, “Mr. Adegoke was invited to provide statements, but he went into hiding. All efforts to reach him were unsuccessful,”
“His accomplice, Mr. Iyiola Monsuru, was apprehended earlier. Through diligent intelligence analysis, Mr. Adegoke was eventually located and arrested at his hideout. During interrogation, he confessed to the alleged crime and pleaded for leniency.”
The police noted that Adegoke was arrested on January 7, 2026, and, along with Monsuru, charged at the Federal High Court, Osogbo, on January 9, 2026.
The statement emphasised that the actions of both men “are purely criminal” and insisted that the investigation was neither politically motivated nor targeted at any political party or affiliate.
“The Osun State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gothan, remains committed to professionalism, impartiality, and the protection of human rights,” the statement read.
The command rejected allegations of partisan conduct or unprofessionalism, stressing that all actions taken were based on formal complaints, credible evidence, and strict adherence to due legal process.
