Disney’s latest movie, Zootopia 2, has crossed a record-breaking $1 billion at the global box office, which is the first animation to ever reach this milestone.

The global box office total, as of today (December 12), is currently at $986.1 million, which consists of $232.7 million domestic and $753.4 million internationally. The sequel will be the second studio movie to hit $1 billion this year and is the fastest to reach this milestone among all the previous animated movies, as well as all PG titles in just 17 days.

Walt Disney Animation Studios now has five back-to-back billion-dollar titles since 2013, including Frozen, Frozen 2, Moana 2, Zootopia, and Zootopia 2. Chief Creative Officer, Jared Bush, released a statement regarding the milestone:

“Everyone at Disney Animation put their heart, soul, and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination, and incredible thoughtfulness. This milestone means the world to us, because more than anything, it means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen, everyone together, from all walks of life around the world – and that is a Zootopia dream come true.”

Zootopia 2, Disney’s highly anticipated sequel, currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 92%, compared to its 2016 predecessor, which has a 98% rating. The sequel follows detective Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) as they try to unravel the case of a mysterious reptile who flips Zootopia upside down, and tests Hopps and Wilde’s partnership to its full potential.

The star-studded cast includes Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, Idris Elba, Shakira, Patrick Warburton, Quinta Brunson, Danny Trejo, Stephanie Beatriz, Macaulay Culkin, and Michael J. Fox.

Zootopia 2 has broken several records, including in China, where it is the country’s highest animated opening of all time for a non-local title with a wild $272 million. As of today, the film is the number 2 MPA release of all time in the country, just behind Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. The Walt Disney Studios now also holds three of the top five highest-grossing MPA titles ever released in the Chinese market.

Zootopia and Zootopia+ are available to stream on Disney+, and Zootopia 2 is available to watch in theaters.
