Zootopia 2 Box Office Previews Outdo Multiple Billion-Dollar Disney Movies

Zootopia 2‘s box office previews have set an important record. The new Walt Disney Animation Studios movie is the sequel to 2016’s Zootopia, which grossed $1.018 billion worldwide by the end of its run. The Zootopia 2 cast includes Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman reprising their roles as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, opposite franchise newcomer Ke Huy Quan as Gary De’Snake.

Per Deadline, Zootopia 2 earned $10.2 million at the domestic box office during its preview screenings on Tuesday. This marks the second-best preview gross for a WDAS feature, behind 2024’s Moana 2 ($14.2 million). This means that it outgrossed the preview totals earned by three of the studio’s four billion-dollar movies (not adjusted for inflation).

As this chart reflects, the fact that Zootopia 2 beat the preview grosses of Frozen II does not mean that it will outgross the $1.452 billion megahit, which remains WDAS’ highest-grossing movie of all time. For instance, while Moana 2 surpassed the 2019 movie’s previews, it ultimately ended its run by falling more than $390 million below Frozen II‘s record-breaking total.

Additionally, Zootopia 2‘s preview grosses have come in $0.5 million below Frozen II‘s previews, when they are adjusted for inflation. However, while the new movie may not be on track to become a record-shattering hit, it seems well on its way toward becoming a billion-dollar hit and outgrossing the original installment in the burgeoning franchise.

Ultimately, preview grosses and opening weekend totals aren’t perfect measures for predicting a movie’s overall performance. However, the new Disney movie is off to a strong start and showing every sign of being a success.

In fact, it has already won over critics, with glowing Zootopia 2 reviews earning it a Certified Fresh score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes (falling just shy of the original Zootopia‘s 98%). While it has not yet earned a Popcornmeter score from RT users or an official CinemaScore, if both are similarly promising, word of mouth could help it rocket up the charts.

Should the new movie indeed hit the billion-dollar mark, it seems highly likely that Disney will give the green light to the potential third movie set up by the Zootopia 2 post-credits scene.
