Yesterday, Apple finally took wraps off its much-awaited first iPad with an OLED display. The company unveiled the iPad Pro and iPad Pro+ both with OLED screens. The so-called Let Loose event also brought more iPads, the first-ever Apple Pencil Pro, the M4 chip, an upgraded Magic Keyboard, and more. Apple releases promo videos and event recording for iPad launch
Apple published four promo videos and a recording of the launch event on YouTube. The first video introduces the two iPad Pro models with OLED screens, which the company calls “the world’s most advanced display” thanks to the tandem OLED technology and Ultra Retina XDR. The firm highlights the screen’s precise contrast, jaw-dropping brightness, and brilliant colors before delving deeper into its thinnest tablet yet. The powerful M4 chip comes next.
Apple says its new tablet processor is “designed to be an AI powerhouse.” It shared more about the chip in a separate video. Produced using TSMC’s second-gen 3nm process, the M4 chip features a deca-core CPU and GPU, with the company claiming a 50% faster CPU performance than the M2 in the previous iPad Pro (2022). The new chip also brings hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing to the iPad lineup for the first time.
The company has also lowered the power consumption of its tablet processor. The M4 can deliver the same performance as the M2 using half its power. The neural engine, aka NPU, is another strength of the M4. It has Apple’s most powerful NPU ever, capable of handling 38 trillion operations per second. Coupled with ML accelerators in the CPU, a high-performance GPU, and more memory bandwidth, the M4 is “an outrageously powerful chip for AI.”
Apple’s promo videos also talk about its first-ever Apple Pencil Pro. It brings a wide range of upgrades, including haptic feedback and a new squeezing gesture. You can use this gesture to open up a menu. The Apple Pencil Pro also supports a rolling gesture to change brush shapes. It is compatible with Apple’s Find My asset tracking service. The new Magic Keyboard also gets haptic feedback, an aluminum palm rest, and a larger trackpad.
