Have you ever wanted to hide memes, random images, and gifs from the Google Photos app main tab? It seems that Google is working on an option that will allow you to do this. There are also other tweaks in development to improve the “Memories” tab.
The changes were spotted by AssembleDebug in the latest Google Photos app update on Android (6.79.0.624777117). We will start with “Hide clutter”, one of the most useful options that the app could receive.
The “Hide clutter” option will hide memes from the main Google Photos tab
Currently, the “Photos” main tab shows not only the pictures taken with the camera, but also the images, gifs, memes, and all the multimedia you download. This behavior can be annoying for those who expect to only see their photos in this tab. With this in mind, the Google Photos app may get a “Hide clutter” option that will basically hide memes, gifs, and anything other than pictures taken with your camera from the “Photos” tab.
The option will not hide the files from the gallery, but will only stop showing them in the “Photos” tab. You can still access them from their respective folders in the “Library” tab. Meanwhile, your Google Photos main tab will be completely free of unwanted content. More specifically, the strings related to the option mention the following: “Backed-up photos like screenshots, GIFs, and memes are hidden.”
The “Memories” tab is getting a new UI & option to disable title suggestions
The update also includes references to a facelift to the “Memories” tab. Now the Memories will appear as rectangles with rounded edges and will have a cover image taken from the album. It seems like a better way to display memories compared to the current random collages.
Lastly, Google Photos could also allow you to disable the AI-generated Memory title suggestions. Sometimes, these automatic titles may be inappropriate for the context or just “weird.” However, now you could completely disable them.
As of today, it is not known when these changes will be implemented. The features appear to be in the early stages of development, so it might not be soon. However, once they are available, they will be quite useful. Especially that option to hide memes and random images from the main Google Photos tab. The one that aims to be available sooner is the switch to disable the suggested Memory titles. The company has already updated its Support Page with information related to this.
