The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over 148 units of military drones valued at N7.8 million and fake $1.25 million bills intercepted at the Lagos airport to the Nigerian Army and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos.
While handing over the drones to the General Officer Commanding 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Mohammed Usman, the outgoing NCS controller, Charles Orbih, said the gadgets have capacity to stay in the air for 72 hours.
According to him, the drones could accommodate first aid kits as well as arms and ammunition capable of being deployed for warfare.
Orbih added that if such gadgets had entered the country, they could constitute security problems.
On revenue generation, Orbih said the command collected N19 billion from January to April 2024, which represents 42 per cent of its yearly target.
He said this represents a 67 per cent increase against the preceding year 2023.
Orbih, who has been appointed Acting Assistant Comptroller General in charge of Zone C, Port Harcourt, listed other seizures made by the command. These included zinc, lithium, copper stones/sand and 120 pieces of SIM cards.
General Usman commended the NCS for the seizure, noting that the Nigerian Army would decide how best to use them.
