New Google Calendar chips speed up scrolling between months

The Google Calendar app is making it easier to navigate between the months of the year with its latest UI tweak. The company is rolling out new Material You chips that allow you to jump directly from one month to another. This is not the first time we have seen this new UI, as it was leaked at the end of last year.

Currently, the Calendar app offers up to four different views or formats. These are “Schedule”, “Day”, “3 days”, “Week” and “Month.” Only the last one offers a complete look at all the days of the month. In the other views, you can display the entire calendar by tapping on the name of the month. However, before, you could only move between months by swiping one by one, which could be a pain.

Now, Google is sending month chips to the Calendar app. These chips are located just below the full calendar after displaying it in the “Schedule”, “Day”, “3 days”, “Week” views. They allow you to jump directly to the month you want after tapping on one. You can also swipe between them to quickly jump between years. This is much more convenient than the previous method, especially if you were looking for a very old date.

The chips were also implemented in the full “Month” view. But, curiously, they are hidden and you must display them by tapping on the name of the month. Additionally, they are located at the top of the calendar instead of below. This breaks the implementation in the other views and can be a bit disconcerting.

The rollout of the new UI seems to have happened recently. However, the latest update of the Google Calendar app for Android (2024.13.1-624115131) arrived a couple of weeks ago. The fact that the tweak is barely being noticed suggests that it is a server-side update.

Lastly, according to 9to5Google, the new Google Calendar chips are coming to Android phones first. The new UI still doesn’t seem to be available in the iOS app or even on Android tablets.
