South Africa’s National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula handed herself to the police on Friday, a day after she announced she was taking “special leave” in the aftermath of a probe into alleged corruption during her time as defence minister.
The embattled Speaker was detained at the Pretoria police station and was expected to appear in court later Friday.
The arrest came a day after Mapisa-Nqakula announced she was taking “special leave” following a raid on her Johannesburg home as part of a probe that she took bribes worth R2.3 million (about US$121,000) from a former defence contractor between 2017 and 2019.
