The origin of the spinoff can be traced back to 1941 when the recurring character Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve from the radio comedy series Fibber McGee and Molly was granted his show titled The Great Gildersleeve. Like the original show, the offshoot became wildly successful, and as a result, the protagonist also appeared in a series of comics and films. Understandably, when television became a thing, networks maintained the practice of extracting an offspring or two out of every popular production.
